2001-2002
Nosferion seeks to create a uniquely American interpretation of the most desolate and primitive side of minimalistic black metal. The band began in 2001 as a collaboration between select members of Vex and Neuro Axis, two death metal bands from the San Angelo area, who shared an appreciation of the kind of black metal that everyone else hated. Eoghan McCloskey ("Odin"), who drummed for both bands, would join together with vocalist Jason Thomson ("Asphyxus") and guitarist Tyler Hughes ("Synox") from Neuro Axis and guitarist Ciaran McCloskey ("Astriloth") from Vex. The quartet immediately began convening in the odd-hours between other rehearsals and within a few months had compiled enough material for a debut recording. The session for this recording, held in a high-school choir-room, spanned merely two days and culminated in the EP "A Burning, Lifeless Eternity," released in summer 2002.The track "Lake of the Dead" was featured on a black metal compilation that was released by the now defunct UK label Blackthrone Productions.
Unfortunately the compilation provoked little to no response due to the folding of Blackthrone Productions shortly after its release. The EP did, however, prompt numerous invitations to play live shows, but unfortunately the band hand to decline them all due to scheduling conflicts. The increasing struggle to find time to merely practice, combined with a series of circumstances would see the gradual undoing of the lineup: Jason no longer had time to focus on the band, Eoghan became interested in other musical endeavours in addition to wanting to attend college outside of San Angelo, and Ciaran and Tyler were also looking to relocate in order to pursue higher education. Ciaran and Tyler ultimately decided to put the band on hold with no long term plans to reform.
2007-Present
Over the next five years Ciaran and Tyler would occasionally convene over spirits but there was never any serious discussion about getting the band back together. It wasn't until the summer of 2007 that the slumbering beast began to stir. At that time, Ciaran had come into contact with a drummer named Collin Stubblefield ("Lord Pryx") from the Austin-based progressive death metal band Ruins of Honor. Upon learning that Collin shared an appreciation for the same primitive black metal bands that originally inspired the forming of Nosferion, the duo began rehearsing and re-working songs from "A Burning Lifeless Eternity." Shortly thereafter, Tyler began making weekly trips to Austin to contribute, and a young, maniacal shrieker from Fort Worth named Seth ("Lord Set") was recruited to complete the lineup. The next two years would see the revised lineup writing new material and playing shows throughout the Central Texas area, including support gigs for HOD, Book of the Black Earth, Nachtmystium and Wolves in the Throne Room.
In Spring of 2009, Nosferion entered Bitcrusher Studio with engineers Adrian Benavides and Michael Day to record several tracks that would be feartured on an EP split with Ramgoat (featuring Collin Stubblefield on vocals.) After leaving the studio, Nosferion spent the remainder of 2009 off the stage in inside the rehersal room writing completely new material. In Early 2010, Tyler moved to Austin and several months later Seth also made the journey. 2010 would mark the first time since 2001 that the all of the band members lived in the same city. This close proximity would usher in an era of new growth and productivity for the band and Nosferion is now more driven than ever.
Nosferion is currently in the final stages of recording their first full length album and hopes to return to the stage to promote the release in the near future.
